The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced that the construction of the Tandang Sora Station for the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) is scheduled to commence on June 29. As a result, motorists can expect traffic slowdowns along the stretch of Mindanao Avenue between Congressional Avenue and Tandang Sora Avenue starting from this date.
To alleviate traffic congestion in the affected area, the DOTr is advising motorists to consider alternative routes. This advisory is part of the department's efforts to manage the traffic flow during the construction phase.
The MMSP, a critical infrastructure project aimed at enhancing the urban transit system in Metro Manila, has currently reached a construction progress of 14 percent. The project is slated for full operation by the latter part of 2029. Spanning 33 kilometers, the subway will traverse eight local government units in Metro Manila and pass through three major business districts. It will interconnect with existing rail systems, including Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line 1, Metro Rail Transit (MRT) Lines 3 and 7 at the Common Station, LRT-2 at Anonas Station, and the North-South Commuter Railway-Extension (NSCR-EX) at FTI and Bicutan Stations.

A notable feature of the MMSP is a spur line extending to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3, potentially reducing travel time from Quezon City to the airport to just 40 minutes. The subway system will operate eight-car trainsets, each capable of carrying up to 2,200 passengers and running at speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour. Trains are expected to arrive at stations every five minutes, significantly improving transit efficiency.
In related developments, the DOTr plans to open the bidding for the operation and maintenance (O&M) of the MMSP, alongside other rail projects such as the NSCR project, within this year. Additionally, the O&M bidding for the MRT-3 and LRT-2 lines is scheduled for the first quarter of next year.
The commencement of the Tandang Sora Station construction marks a significant milestone in the MMSP, bringing Metro Manila a step closer to a more integrated and efficient transportation network. The DOTr's proactive measures in managing traffic and advancing rail infrastructure underscore the commitment to enhancing urban mobility for millions of commuters in the capital region.
